Op-Ed: Not Far Enough

06/22/2016 7:21 PM | 107ist Admin (Administrator)

—by Andrew Brawley

A recent review of the Timbers Army chant catalog resulted in the elimination of a chant deemed offensive to a select group or groups within our membership. I fully support the 107ist Board's decision and subsequent action.

Furthermore, after conducting my own review of the since-updated chant sheet, I wish to submit the following list of words and phrases found herein that could also be deemed offensive to select audiences.

I humbly ask the 107ist Board to reconvene at their earliest convenience to review this list and modify or remove the affected chant(s) deemed offensive to our community.

Thank you for your time.

Can we also tone down the drums? Ear damage for children is a serious issue. Throwing streamers and confetti can cause paper cuts to someones cornea. Waving scarves can go rouge and cause damage to someone’s face. Smoke bombs effect asthma. Standing for 90+ is bad for joints and spinal alignment. Tetris can cause bodily damage to those less mobile. All the spilled/unattended beer creates opportunity for underage drinking and roofies. Flags can leave nasty bruises or give someone a concussion if they are hit. Im also concerned with some of the negative chants towards opposing teams/players this can lower self esteem and set the example bullying is tolerated to impressionable youth. If we all inclusive and sensitive to others, these are some additional issues worth looking into.

Come find us in the drums. I’ll give you earplugs.

For anyone that would like to vote from the following three options from thehttps://www.reddit.com/r/timbers thread and poll currently going on:
    http://www.strawpoll.me/10562801
    1) Do nothing; leave as is.
    2) Alter specific line in question to something else; keep chant.
    3) Comprehensive removal of chant altogether.

Excellent post. The stupidity of it, and the supportive comments, has pushed me from the “I don’t feel strongly but support the change” camp to “yeah, fuck that chant” camp.

I hate being politically correct. Boys and girls this a fucking soccer match. Let’s have some fun. Last match I inserted “shemale first verse, husband second verse, wife third verse, etc. etc. etc. Ladies get off your high horse and see this for what this is. Remember it’s fun to hate Seattle. There’s no offense intended or implied. It’s a fucking soccer match.let’s have some fun. Or burn Seattle

I’d be honored if the entire Army would sing “Shag your Matt an drink your beer” . I think my wife would get a kick out of it also. She gets it.
