St. Baldrick’s Day with Timber Joey: Shave for the cure

04/06/2011 4:45 PM | 107ist Admin (Administrator)

Next month, Timber Joey and 107ist Board member Sean Moran will be leading the Timbers Army into the fight against children’s cancer.

For nine years now, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation has been raising money in order to fund childhood cancer research. All told, the foundation raised $22 million last year, with $133,000 of that collected in Portland.

Joey already has his own fund-raising page on the St. Baldrick’s website, and you can go here to donate.

You can also collect pledges and raise money by shaving your head along with hundreds of others on Saturday, May 14 at Oaks Park. Details for Timbers Army participants are here: www.stbaldricks.org/teams/timbersarmy

Joey will set the tone for the event on May 5, when he has his head shaved during Drew Carney’s “Out & About” segment of the “NewsChannel 8 at Sunrise” newscast from 5-7 a.m.

For his part, Sean has promised to have his head shaved during the bus trip up to Seattle on May 14th – hopefully on a straight, smooth section of I-5.

My first Timbers game today and it was awesome. The Timbers Army is so damn impressive! I went with my boys today and they really enjoyed themselves. We were able to go to the game courtesy of the CCA (Childrens Cancer Association). My 4.5 year old son, Ramsey, has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). He has 1 year from today remaining in his treatment and is doing great! Do you know why? RESEARCH! It is research. St. Baldrick’s is leading the way and contributes the 2nd most money to childhood cancer research next to the US Government. Seriously, it’s the research. The cure rate for Ramsey’s leukemia was 3% in the 1950s and now sits at ~85-90%. Anybody can be amazed at those percentages but especially a parent whose child has those percentages as his 5 year survival rate. Your Timber Joey is shaving to be a hero…Portland Mayor Sam Adams is shaving to be a hero…another big name will be communicated soon as being a hero… all hero’s for kids with cancer.

Last year the St. Baldrick’s event in Portland raised over $133,000 for childhood cancer research with 193 people shaving for the cause. So far this year 183 people have signed up but we can make is so much more. 27 days to go. Shave at our Oaks Park event @ 1:00 on 05/14 and then go to Seattle or go to your favorite viewing location to watch the Timbers stomp Seattle! Shave with Sean Moran on the bus on the way up to Seattle. This is about raising money and awareness so be generous and spread the word!

    To donate to Timber Joey:

The Timbers Army is huge and I experienced the power of numbers personally today at the game. Please consider supporting St. Baldrick’s and life saving and changing research dollars. Shave with the Timbers Army! team and be a hero for kids with cancer just like Timber Joey. It is only hair but it means SO much. Thank you.
