You're Singing the National Anthem

03/05/2012 2:12 PM | 107ist Admin (Administrator)

Last year old a rain soaked night we welcomed MLS to Portland and ushered in a new era with the "It Takes an Army to Raise a Club" tifo everyone remembers so well. That very same night the Timbers Army sang the Star Spangled Banner rather than having a performer sing the National Anthem. As a board we thought it was a fantastic idea and supported it wholeheartedly. It turns out singing the national anthem as a group was one of the more memorable events in an evening sopping with memorable events.

This year the club asked the board if we wanted to repeat the performance. We respectfully declined the offer for a few reasons, which at the time made a lot of sense to us. The main reason being we didn’t want to try and recreate such a singular and memorable event. In other words we were thinking that the cover is never as good as the original.

We received a lot of feedback about that decision. Some of it in support but much of it expressed a lot of disappointment that we weren’t going to sing the National Anthem at the home opener again. We have heard your feedback loudly and clearly. We’re happy to announce than upon reconsideration we’ve decided that we will sing the National Anthem again at the home opener because the Timbers Army wants it. We decided to be the sole ones responsible for singing it, as we already sing it every game with the talent on the field. Let’s make this year louder and even better. You have a little over a week to get your voice ready to welcome in the 2012 campaign.

I am really pleased about this decision. I agree that the original moment was special and can’t be duplicated, but this makes sense to me.

There are certainly worse traditions we could have than singing the national anthem at the first home game every year. I think this is a good one.

Thanks for listening to the people and responding accordingly.
I hope this becomes a tradition. I wouldn’t worry too much; nothing can nor should compare to singing it last year.

Here are the words, for those that need them:
    God save our gracious Queen,
    Long live our noble Queen,
    God save the Queen:
    Send her victorious,
    Happy and glorious,
    Long to reign over us:
    God save the Queen.

    No wait…

I am happy we get to do so again…..first game of each season (or every game) works for me. One request of the capos to make it “better” this year: Start in a lower key. Last year it was so high, that we had to scream the “rockets red glare….” and in my musical opinion, lost some of the specialness (very special still no matter that). Soooooooo, lower key please (Timber Jim as the appropriate range in his voice…so maybe he could be the “tuner” :-) ) Thanks…looking forward to awesomeness once again.

How bout the scarves being tossed in the air? It used to only start at the point of singing “the rockets red glare” but now its the first line…is this the way it should be, or should the scarf tossing actually follow along with the song? Decisions decisions

Great news, but can the trumpets play a single note beforehand so we all start out in the same key? That would help our sound enormously.

Well done Timbers Army! I think it is an awesome Opening Day tradition. Of course you can’t recreate last year, but that doesn’t mean it is a bad idea. I have friends and family across the country who became Timbers fans BECAUSE of that performance in 2011. Can’t wait to sing my heart out tomorrow night. Thank you.
