Soccer Supporters Unite

PORTLAND, Oregon (15 February, 2012) - Soccer rivalries are known for their intensity, but leadership of soccer supporters groups from across the US and Canada set aside their rivalries last weekend in Portland, Oregon for the Independent Supporters Council (ISC) conference.

The ISC works to promote supporters’ culture in North America, and defend the rights of soccer supporters. Over the weekend, representatives of supporters of 16 of the 19 teams in Major League Soccer discussed issues facing supporters, and revised and ratified the Independent Supporters Council Charter, including the Supporters Bill of Rights.

“By speaking with a singular voice for all recognized supporters groups regarding issues that may be specific to one group, but that affect all, ISC can effectively use the collective leverage of all groups to protect the interests of each individual group,” said Jason Corliss board member of Red Bull New York's Viking Army SC.

“MLS is beginning to appreciate the role of supporters, and aren’t just marketing the game to soccer moms any longer. It’s a step in the right direction, but we want to make certain all supporters can safely and passionately follow their team wherever they travel,” said Abram Goldman-Armstrong, a founding member of the ISC and board member of the Timbers Army 107 Independent Supporters Trust, which hosted the conference in Portland.

ISC initiatives include:

Coordinating an annual ISC conference open to delegations of supporters from all clubs in the United States and Canada, including MLS, lower-league levels and women’s soccer

Tracking incidents and advocating for stadium security trained to understand supporter culture

Developing clear, consistent guidelines and fair ticket allocations for traveling supporters

Organizing the administration and funding of a new Supporters' Shield trophy

Advocating for an MLS schedule that is favorable to traveling fans, especially rivalry games

Working for the adoption of a league-wide Supporters’ Bill of Rights

Groups in attendance who ratified the charter:

  • Los Angeles Galaxy (Angel City Brigade)
  • Columbus (Hudson St. Hooligans)
  • San Jose Earthquakes (Casbah)
  • Real Salt Lake (Rogue Cavaliers Brigade)
  • Vancouver Whitecaps (Southsiders)
  • New York Red Bulls (Viking Army)
  • New York Red Bulls (Empire Supporters Club)
  • Chivas USA (Union Ultras)
  • Chicago Fire (Section 8 Chicago ISA)
  • Colorado Rapids (Pid Army)
  • Colorado Rapids (Bulldog Supporters Group)
  • New England (Midnight Riders)
  • Portland Timbers (Timbers Army/107 Independent Supporters Trust)
  • DC United (Screaming Eagles)
  • Houston Dynamo (Texian Army)
  • Toronto FC (Red Patch Boys)

ISC - The Independent Supporters Council was founded in 2009 to advocate for the fair treatment of home and away supporters, promote supporter culture, and oppose racism and bias in the stadium. www.soccersupporters.org

107ist - The 107 Independent Supporters Trust is the not-for-profit organization of the Timbers Army, dedicated to supporting soccer in and around Portland, Oregon, from the grassroots to the highest professional level. www.timbersarmy.org

Was there any reason that there was no Seattle representation?

Wait, Seattle sent nobody to a conference in Portland? Are ECS/Gorilla refusing to participate in ISC?

Gorilla FC sent representatives as did the Cauldron in KC who had to leave prior to ratification. They have indicated electronically they will be doing so shortly.

Gorilla FC and the Kansas City Cauldron were both in attendance at the summit but had to leave before the final document was prepared. They will sign it electronically if they have not done so already. (ECS apparently is of the opinion that the ISC isn’t needed — and, as the inventors of soccer support, they surely have a point, no?)

I’m sure if the meeting had been conducted in French then Montreal would have attended. Dallas doesn’t seem to have any supporters so their absence isn’t a surprise. It is a little disappointing that no one from the Son’s of Ben made it out.

The Sounders customers were originally headed across the border when the Southsiders explained to them the definition of ‘South’. As nice Canadians, they put it in terms Gorilla FC could understand, using terms such as ‘down’ and ‘the city near Vancouver, Washington’.

I am so glad this happened. Just today Arsenal fans trashed Piazza Duomo in my husband’s hometown of Milano. We were so disgusted by their lack of respect for the city & it’s citizens. While we’re not Milan fans – Inter supporters through & through – it’s still home. Bravo 107ist’s & all other supporter clubs for being organized & respectful of each other.

    Lucas,

The Supporters Shield trophy is about 16 years old, 2 feet tall and was made by an art student friend of Andy Mead’s at University of Kansas. We decided that it’s time for a trophy that represents the achievement that it is to win the regular season title. We will have an open competition for design and construction of a trophy, something unique and not out of trophy shop.

Chris, all were invited. The ISC has and hopes to have many more 2nd and lower division supporters groups participating. As can be expected in the American soccer landscape today funds for all clubs participating weren’t available but by no means does that diminish 2nd and 3rd division supporters clubs value.

Thanks for the info. Glad to hear it. We grow in strength by remembering our roots. As the TA has demonstrated for many years, a 2nd division supporters group can wield a lot of power and influence. Here’s to supporting the grass roots, Soccer for the People!

So basically you’re saying we should have reached out to a supporters group nobody knows exists (not even the DC guys know), has not participated in any of the work surrounding the ISC over the last 3 years and if the website you are linking to is the supporters group website appears to be a supporters group of dudes who celebrate being fat along with some gibberish writing?

Sorry man…your group is welcome to come to ISC events but if nobody knows you exist then you aren’t going to get an invite.
