A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM YOUR CAPOS: NEW CHANTS!

07/23/2012 10:49 AM | 107ist Admin (Administrator)

Because supporting the Timbers is as much an act of creativity as it is an act of faith....

Because we all love to find new ways to celebrate our team and our town....

Because maybe the gameday playlist was getting a little repetitive....

Because Seattle fans need new songs to steal....

Your Capos and Drum-and-Trumpet Corps have whipped up two new chants, which we’ll start using on Saturday, July 28, against Chivas.

***************************************************************************

The first is a short rouser adapted from a chant performed by fans of the Japanese J-League team Kashima Antlers:

KEEP IT UP

Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh-ohh!

Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh-ohh!

Keep it up, Rose City!

Don't let up, no pity!

Keep it up, Rose City!

Whoa-oh-oh-oh-ohh!

to this melody: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nomZM6zcxdM#t=1m09s

***************************************************************************

The second is a Timbers Army original based on “Bella Ciao,” the classic Italian tune of Anarchist rebellion. The lyrics are adapted from Chumbawamba’s version of the song. (As far as we know, no other supporters in the world sing this famous melody; read more about the song here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bella_ciao)

BELLA CIAO

We are the Timbers, the Portland Timbers,

Green and Gold, Green and Gold, Green and Gold, Gold, Gold!

With our friends now, up to the city,

We're gonna shake the gates of hell!

Next time you see us, we may be smiling,

Green and Gold, Green and Gold, Green and Gold, Gold, Gold!

Maybe in prison, or on the TV,

We'll say the Timbers brought us here!

to this melody: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaomLvwS8Rw&feature=player_detailpage#t=28s

******************************************************************

Learn ‘em, love ‘em, share ‘em, and print up the lyrics and bring ‘em to the game to share with your Timbers Army neighbors in the glorious reserved seat-free sections of the North End!

I think that really should be:

    “Or in prison, ….”

But other than that, mia lika.

I say keep it similar to the original, “We’ll be in prison, or on the tv!”.

this is something i don’t understand. as a season ticket holder, i yell and scream and sing regardless of capos there or not. against aston villa the army was a disgrace. the loudest we ever got was when timber joey led a chant. and, it was a FULL army section, not sparse like other exhibitions i’ve been to. sorry bout the rant, i’m sure everyone reading this sings their asses off, too!

    @cholo viejo

Yes there were capos. I saw them they were there. So what was disgraceful? The fact that it wasn’t as raucus as a game that matters instead of a friendly or the fact you came to a friendly expecting as much response as a game that matters? The capos, drums, trumpets, flags people don’t feel the need to show up 3 hours before a game that doesn’t matter and stick around an hour afterwards cleaning up for a game that doesn’t matter. Were you disgraced we didn’t impress Tom Hanks?

Since I’ve been pushing “Bella Ciao” for years, I’m frikkin’ thrilled.

This has so much potential for WIN, but if we can work a horn section and a mix up of fast, fast, slow on alternating verses this could become IMMORTAL.

Also, with all due respect to ChumbaWamba, listen to the end of this Modena City Ramblers version for an appreciation of how powerful this can be from a mass audience with minimal musical accompaniment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55yCQOioTyY

ile I’d love to claim Bella ciao as anarchist – it is actually more widely an Italian Partisan (anti-fascist song) sung to the tune of an old Klezmer song. I have dozens of versions of the song. Also, it is often sung in original lyrics at soccer matches as there are a significant number of anti-fascist football clubs

“Bella Ciao” is very famous in Italy. Here, supporters’ groups are often very political (even if in a superficial way). In Livorno (close to my home) the soccer team is not a powerhouse but anyway the play in the top tier (Serie A), that is very good for a city of about 150.000. Moreover, the average attendance at their matches is quite high. The team’s supporters are very leftist (they say) and they sing “Bella Ciao” quite often: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rFJojYFEEQ
