Open Letter to the 1906 Ultras

09/20/2012 9:25 AM | 107ist Admin (Administrator)

Dear. Mr. and Mrs. Ultras,

I feel compelled to write you as it seems your kids have suffered from some unfortunate misguidance. I don’t want to raise any alarms, and am not looking to get anyone in trouble. I am merely concerned with their inability to play well with others.

It’s unfortunate that the kids are based in San Jose. Being commonly regarded as the “third-of-three” city in the Bay Area would be tough on most kids. Nobody remembers the bronze medalist at the Olympics, or the second runner-up at the Miss America pageant, so nobody can fault the kids for having an inferiority complex.

Also, your neighbors that do share their common interests aren’t really neighbors at all. The kids to the north (Portland, Seattle, Vancouver) tend to focus on each other, and have done so since the 70’s. The other two kids (Los Angeles and Chivas USA) are forced to focus on each other due to some kind of lame experiment being orchestrated from the east coast.

Basically, it’s not your fault that your kids are stuck with a label of “double outcast.” They’re just isolated by geography and cultural upbringing.

The real unfortunate part is that your kids have already got a good thing going right there in San Jose. Your kids get to watch a high-performing soccer team in their own back yard in a setting that allows them a level of access that your neighbors don’t have. Once the new stadium is completed, that level of access will be greatly reduced. I would implore them to appreciate it while they can.

After reviewing their tifo display from last night’s match against the Timbers, I think it may be in the best interest of your kids to seek help from professionals. Your so-called neighbors rarely go to great expense (in time, effort and money) to simply call out the opponent in a manner that doesn’t make much sense, regardless of whether it was intended to be serious or humorous. Instead, this display simply revealed the fact that your kids desperately want attention from someone (or some people) that really couldn’t be more indifferent about them. It made us feel sad for them.

Please do what you can to turn your kids’ attention back onto their own team, especially since that team is currently in first place, and is worthy of it. Their efforts would be better spent inspiring their own team rather than forcing the opponents’ fans to scratch their heads.

Sincerely,

Andrew Brawley

Treasurer/Secretary, Neighborhood Watch

I really have no idea what that TIFO is supposed to mean? Are those sheep or dogs? Of course Merritt is pulling the strings… he’s the owner. The only reason I’d ever find myself in San Jose is to attend a trade show, otherwise, a pretty boring place to live. It’s obvious they have way too much time on their hands.

I’m not suprised by any of what transpired last night. We were warned by the Angel City Brigade when we went to the LA match last season about the Ultra’s from San Jose. They’ve apparently had run-ins with other supporter groups as well. And if they want to to make colorful meaningless TIFO’s, I say let them have at it.

We took a dig at you guys for being sellouts. Not once have I heard any evidence to the contrary. Anyway, the adult response here would have been a tifo against us, but instead we get this online bitch fest. And we’re the kids?
Run ins with other SG’s? You mean with ACB themselves (who try to wait outside for us every time we’re in LA) and ECS (who’s shenanigans you know all too well). Then yeah, I guess you’re right.

in all seriousness though, i think it’s rad that so much time, effort, and money was spent specifically to gain our attention. i think it should be our goal to get one of those from every SG and keep our tifo related to uplifting our team.

For those keeping score it means they are just asshats.

How is the Timbers Army a sellout? Have you paid *ANY* attention to the goings-on between Timbers supporters and Merritt Paulson? Any at all?
Even two months ago, this would have been slightly humorous and misguided. Now? Now it’s a combination of hilariously desperate, and hopelessly out of touch.
As for replying with tifo? No thanks. If there is tifo when you’re up here, it will be because it is the last match of the season, and will be directed as support for the players on the pitch, not the traveling fans.
(I was at the San Jose match last year – last year’s tifo was also directed against Portland, not toward your support of your own players. Do you guys just have a massive inferiority complex about the Timbers Army down there?)

    Um, what?
Timbers Army has many members. Many *GENEROUS* members. That is why the 107ist has a bank account – one that largely goes to local charities. For example, nearly $60,000 to one charity (Harper’s Playground – a disabled-friendly playground,) in the last two years alone.
Not one thin dime of the Timbers Army’s money has come from Merritt Paulson. (Yes, a small percentage of “Timbers Army” season tickets do go to the 107ist, but that is a fixed-per-ticket amount that was negotiated, and doesn’t come “from Merritt”.)

Are we sheep or puppets? Or sheep puppets? You guys need to pick one metaphor and stick to it.
It’s not that it was about us, it’s just that it was weird and nonsensical. We’re not sure what it was supposed to mean. Our SG has no history with your SG and from the people commenting online, you guys don’t really seem to understand how 107ist or the Timbers Army work or what our relationship with Merritt Paulson is. FACT: every single SG in MLS would kill to have the relationship we do with our FO and the amount of freedom and independence they give us. Nobody tells us what to do or what not to do. They’re certainly not getting results on the field right now, but if showing up and supporting our team through thick and thin makes us sheepuppets, I guess we’re guilty as charged.
Really, it just came across as a bizarre cry for attention. You’re trying to start a fight in hopes we’ll hate you as much as we hate Seattle or something. You know what would have earned our respect? A display like that about YOUR team – you know, your first place team with the league’s leading goal scorer that you were presumably there to see?

Yes, a small percentage of “Timbers Army” season tickets do go to the 107ist, but that is a fixed-per-ticket amount that was negotiated
So you admit that your sellouts? You make money off each ST that is bought in TA? So you can afford to make tifo off of money from your FO from ST’s? Sounds like sell outs to me…

Nope, tifo is primarily funded by merch sales plus donations and membership dues. Other donations, ST income & remaining membership funds go to doing good in the local community.
So by your logic helping the local community = selling out.

I don’t even live in Oregon to benefit from the partnership discounts the TA has with many local businesses, but proudly pay my membership dues & buy merchandise from the 107ist store because I know the money goes into the tifo & the many wonderful charities that the TA funds/works with/volunteers for. I doubt that I’m the only TA in exile that pays their dues. That’s not the definition of a sell-out.

Sellouts = giving thousands to local charities. Working with local clubs to grow soccer in the region by rehabbing local soccer fields and in some cases building entirely new ones. Providing scholarships. Packing our stands in the midst of a very trying season when SJ can’t fill their little stadium to watch one of the best teams in the league.

Lol, watching that game was pathetic, how does the number one team in the Mls have fan support and a stadium like that, I thought I was watching high school soccer, made the whole game bland. They only put up a tifo because they want to be apart of the biggest rivalry in Mls soccer, which is the northwest teams, an they want to do that because they are trying to build some tv time and fan base off of the rivalry. The city of San Jose should not even have a team of thy is the kind of support they show, they make us soccer look bad.

We are not a supporter group. We are Ultras! A whole different story. You have thousands of paid members and you brought 50 last night. We have 300 paid members and we are bringing 150 in Seattle. You pull some lame “agreement with ECS” excuse, for your lack of tifo in the derby. The truth is that you were just lazy, and that out of all your members, you find enough to put together a tifo for your derby. You have numbers, and no quality. You are a joke…Making yourself look like a bunch of clowns, meowing an accepting to be ridiculed in that Portlandia clip, just for some camera time and some attention. That’s what you are. You are average fair weather fans willing to stand and sing. That’s all. You’ll never be Ultra, and you’ll never understand this concept. TA, you are a disgrace! Go cuddle with your buddies from LA. You think 50 TA traveling to the south bay on a Wednesday to watch the team they love play on a college field in the suburbs is lame.
You think the TA are lazy because we put energy into things like community volunteering rather than tifo for the 2nd S**ttle home match (conveniently ignoring the fact that we only did tifo for one Vancouver home match for the same reason).
You think supporters who consistently fill the stands every match, even in a tough season, are fair weather fans.

As for their tifo; it was sub-par, but at least they made one. It’ll get better with time, and who knows? Maybe they will get the rivalry they seem to desperately want. But it won’t be from us. Hey Ultras, get your parents to help with this delicious recipe since there is boiling water and you may hurt yourselves!
    Yum,
    Meow
    Ingredients
    Sauerkraut Filling:
    2 tablespoons butter
    1/3 cup chopped onion
1 1/2 cups sauerkraut, drained and minced
    salt and pepper to taste

    Potato Filling:
    3 tablespoons butter
    1/2 cup chopped onion
    2 cups cold mashed potatoes
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon white pepper

    Dough:
    3 egg
1 (8 ounce) container sour cream
    3 cups all-purpose flour
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1 tablespoon baking powder
    Directions
To prepare the sauerkraut filling, melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in the onion, and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the drained sauerkraut and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper, then remove to a plate to cool.
For the mashed potato filling, melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in the onion, and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir into the mashed potatoes, and season with salt and white pepper.
To make the dough, beat together the eggs and sour cream until smooth. Sift together the flour, salt, and baking powder; stir into the sour cream mixture until dough comes together. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until firm and smooth. Divide the dough in half, then roll out one half to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into 3 inch rounds using a biscuit cutter.
Place a small spoonful of the mashed potato filling into the center of each round. Moisten the edges with water, fold over, and press together with a fork to seal. Repeat procedure with the remaining dough and the sauerkraut filling.
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add perogies and cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until pierogi float to the top. Remove with a slotted spoon.

Since – like the rest of the world – I just do not care about San Jose, my first reaction to this tifo was that it seemed sort of strange, wildly ill-informed, off-topic, and ultimately, just clownish.
    Then, straining through the slightest, vaguest memories of past tifo from San Francisco’s unpopular, adopted, cousin-through-marriage, I recalled this gem;
    http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc182/san_jose_ultras/b-1.jpg
    A brief google search also produced this bon mott;
    http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-a4ANKjVuc8M/TX4js-2qi6I/AAAAAAAABNM/nWT4IKjutmM/1906ultras2.jpg
I can’t be bothered to look further but – based on these – I also just can’t escape the suspicion that 1906 Ultras are 14 years old, we are not their real father, and they will NOT mow the lawn …but they may have punched a Chuckie Cheese animatronic character when no one showed up to their birthday party.
I’m also guessing they are the ones that inexplicably draw all those giant cocks in men’s public restrooms while secretly wishing the Juggalos would just accept them as their own.
    And in summary…
    …I still just don’t care.

Agree with Sheba, taking the piss out of ourselves, events, and random others who stray in our path just at the wrong moment is needed every so often.

    Dan,
That tifo was all my idea, but I was doing a looooot of drugs back then. Unfortunately it was just shortly thereafter that I started designing all of the tifo for the 1906 ultras guys while I spent time in SJ. Since I was still still under the influence, I guess I led you guys astray. For that I’m sorry (that apology counts as one of my steps).
Now that I’m sober, I realize how pathetic and stupid it is to spend weeks painting tifo logos and likenesses of clubs I hate.

Let us know when your top-of-the-MLS-table team’s supporters group can beat our then-division-2 supporters group in tifo size and complexity.
    kthxbai.
And it was a reference to the opposing *CITY*, not the opposing team’s *supporters group*. If you had, say, had an animated tifo where an earthquake caused one of our bridges to collapse, that would have been damned impressive.

How dumb are you? The video is a representation of what the fans were hoping would happen on the pitch. There was no badmouthing the ECS or the Sounders, only a message that we wanted to beat them.

Just realized their supporter group’s name glorifies an event which caused the destruction of a city and the deaths of 3,000 people.
In 100 years when New Orleans gets a MLS franchise I hope they’ll call their supporters group the Katrinas just to genuflect to the 1906 guys.

Awww, isn’t that cute. Rather than sucking up and facing that another team other than the sounders can make a tifo about Portland, they try to write at a middle school age-level to a team that is kicking their arses in the standings. Great job San Jose, see y’all in the playoffs! Love Sounders Fan 40,000.
