Entertainment & Shopping

Entertainment

There’s live music every night in Portland, but that’s just the beginning. You can also catch a roller derby bout, visit a museum or garden, go to a science pub, sign up for a cooking class, take a river cruise, or join some other fans watching a soccer match at a neighborhood pub.

For a calendar of live, local music, check out the Willamette Week or the Portland Mercury, which have information on all sorts of arts and entertainment activities. For a calendar with a little more of an indie flavor, check out PDX Pipeline; they also have weekly ticket giveaways. Another good source of local info is the Dave Knows website.

Shopping

Eclectic boutiques and outdoor stores combined with no sales taxes make for a great shopping destination. The two must-sees are the Portland Saturday Market (it’s open on Sundays too) and Powell’s City of Books on Burnside.

There are lots of wonderful neighborhoods to explore in Portland: Hawthorne District, Pearl District, Downtown, Nob Hill, Sellwood District, and Mississippi Avenue, just to name a few. Hop on the bus or train and explore them all, or ask a local what their favorite is.

Oh yeah, did we mention that there is no sales tax in Oregon?
